Match the generator to your home’s actual load, not the maximum possible load. A 5,000W unit is better for a 3,000W load than a 13,000W unit, because fuel efficiency is much better at proper load. If you are running central AC, plan for 12,000W or more. If you are only running essentials, 5,000W to 7,500W is plenty. Add a transfer switch or interlock kit, place the unit at least 20 feet from your home, and run it according to the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule.
